I Found a Sushi!

April 11, 2010 0 Comments

To think a few years back when I had only just started dating Brian, we went to Josie in New York City for restaurant week. It was a very hip scene the likes I don’t know that I had ever  seen. Here I had my first taste of sushi, a tuna roll, a huge piece that I found hard to eat and even harder to enjoy. It was my first and last  taste for about three years.

That all changed when I was working in the pastry department at the Modern one Sunday. The chef on duty was David Lee. He had prior experience working with sushi. Since we had some nice tuna in house he made a few rolls for everyone to try. It was much different then my first taste years before. It was small and I could comfortably eat in one bite.  The tuna was so fresh and really highlighted in the roll. It opened me to a whole new world of which I never thought I would be a part of.

Immediately I went home and told Brian of my exposure to this dish. He helped me  slowly open the door to a whole verity of eating possibilities. We would eat at many different places trying to find what I liked. Other people help to educate me too. A friend was dinning at 15 East in Union Square and shared his eel sashimi with me. I thought “wow ,what a savory, sweet, and intense umami. Umami is the fifth taste, it means mouth feel, the tastes that make you salivate like mushrooms cooked in butter (yum). The next night we took our adventure to Bond Street. We were treated to an amazing verity of fresh raw sea food. From sea urchin that was slightly bruleed, lobster brain, and mackerel with a quick marinade of a sweet vinegar and thin strips of celery.

Now a days we tend to go to a locale place called Watawa. We always take a seat at the sushi bar, so was can see the different colorful rolls being made. The skillful chefs gentle work their sharp knifes around fish, vegetables, and artfully put together glorious displays for each guest. Brian like to start with the miso soup. We share either the Rock shrimp appetizer which is tempura shrimp covered in a spicy mayonnaise, with a few walnuts which help to cut the spice and are very yummy. Or we will get the gyoza, a pan fried pork dumpling, a favorite we learned about from another Japaneses restaurant that is no longer around.  Finally the rolls! Our staples are spicy tuna, the dragon ( eel, avocado, and cucumber), and the pauline (shrimp tempura and spicy crab meat) my mouth is watering just remembering the well balanced flavors of it all. This affordable outpost for one of our favorite meals is not as fancy as some other places we have tried but they provide a wonderful product and warm and comfortable atmosphere that we love to be a part of.

I have come so far over the years. Expanded my comfort zone and been exposed to what wonderful foods are out there. Who knows where this daring new exploration will take me but I’m ready for the ride.
