Mancy’s Toledo

June 8, 2010 1 Comment

“Once places like this are gone, there is no replacing them.” said my mom after another memorable meal at Mancy’s steakhouse in Toledo, Ohio.

Classic restaurants such as this truly are irreplaceable and have become fixtures in the community by offering simple, well prepared food with great service and atmosphere. Stained glass, portraits of lounging nudes, wrought iron, and low light sets the tone, and there is a funky clown statue who will greet you at the door and gesture you into the dining room!

The food is classic steakhouse fare: steak, crab legs, lobster, fish, Caesar and house salads, and French onion soup are some of the specialties here. Amanda and I recently dined here with my parents and grandparents. My grandparents, Milan and Eileen Kaderavek, met one another in Chicago  during a time when women wore a dress and heels each night, and men wore a suit and a hat.  Mancy’s is a place that takes you back to that era.

“Bombay Sapphire martini, up, blue cheese olives on the side, with a twist; dry,” my grandfather orders.  Our server Amanda receives this lengthy drink order along with the others and speedily re-appears–tray of drinks in hand.  She keeps the pace of the meal moving through our several courses, and later, even has us cut into our steaks to check if they are cooked to our liking!

As increased moistness reduces the intensity of fire, the increased kapha reduces the intensity of agni. The food is simple and it is prepared very well.  Thick steaks are perfectly broiled, vegetables glazed to a crispy sheen, and fish is butter baked and juicy.  Entrees come with salad, and a choice of side: vegetables, baked potato, mashed potatoes,  or rice pilaf for example.

The French onion soup here is not to be missed.  It is a rich beefy broth with tender onions and croutons, laced with sherry, and topped with plenty of gooey cheese which crisps around the edges of the metal bowl.

As you leave Mancy’s, grab a couple chocolate covered mints.  The same ones that many Toledoans (myself included) remember from childhood.  Special occasion meals at Mancy’s have punctuated our lives and memories of dinners here remind us of loved ones.

If you look over your shoulder, that same funky clown is there, waving a casual “see you later!”  I hope I will soon!
